Welcome CompuServe Classic Users
Posted May 21st 2009 11:20AM by Webmail Team
Important Update (June 9, 2009, 4:28pm ET):
We believe we have fixed the majority of issues with the new mail system and have noticed that the system has been stable for the past 12 hours.
We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience through this migration. If you are experiencing any problems, please call Tech Support at 1-800-848-8990 or email us (websuiteblog@aol.com) to let us know exactly what is happening and provide as much detail as you can. This will help us to resolve your issue.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As mentioned in earlier communications, the CompuServe Classic service will no longer operate as an Internet Service Provider as of June 30th, 2009. As a result, we have been working on enabling you to retain your CompuServe Classic email address -- by migrating to a new email system. Your email service is available to you at no charge -- but you will need to provide your own Internet access.
Some of the benefits of the new system include:
- Unlimited storage, which lets you keep as many messages as you want
- Ability to receive large messages (up to 16MB per message)
- Industry leading spam and virus protection to help eliminate threats and hassles
- Open accessibility and compatibility with IMAP and POP3
- Seamless integration with AIM for instant messaging
Below are answers to frequently asked questions by users that have gone through the email migration process:
1. How do I login to my CompuServe Classic mailbox? Once you have completed the migration, you will need to go to
http://webmail.compuserve.com and login with your full compuserve email address (e.g. username@compuserve.com) and the password you created during the migration.
NOTE: we have fixed the problem with selecting the "Stay signed in until I sign out" option.
2. Which username should I use to login to my CompuServe Classic mailbox? If you only have a numeric based User ID (e.g. 77777.7777), you will enter the User ID along with "@compuserve.com" (e.g. 77777.7777@compuserve.com) in the "E-mail or Screen Name" field.
However, if you have a friendly name (in addition to your numeric based User ID), you will need to use your friendly name as the username (i.e. friendlyname@compuserve.com). Your "friendly name" has been made the primary login name and the numeric based Member ID as an alias (which will allow you to continue to receive email sent to this User ID).
3. If I have a friendly name and a numeric based Member ID, which address will mail that I send from my CompuServe Classic mailbox display from?If you have a friendly name and a numeric-based User ID, all mail that you send from your CompuServe Classic mailbox will display from the friendly name.
4. If I have a friendly name and a numeric based Member ID, will I continue to receive email that is addressed to my numeric based Member ID? Yes, you will still receive any email that is addressed to your numeric-based User ID, however when you reply to that email, it will be addressed from your friendly name.
5. I just logged into my new CompuServe Classic mailbox and I don't see any of my old email?
We are working on migrating all your old email. It should be available to you within 24 hours of when you initiated your mailbox's migration.
6. Why is my CompuServe Classic account no longer forwarding email to my CompuServe 2000 account? The new email system does not support the auto-forwarding of email at this time. We are working to support this feature in the future. You will need to login to your CompuServe Classic mailbox (
http://webmail.compuserve.com) to read, reply, and send messages -- or access your mailbox via a POP3 or IMAP client.
7. Can I use a third party email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc) to send and receive email to my CompuServe Classic mailbox?Yes, you can use any third-party email client that supports either POP3 or IMAP. Below are the POP3, IMAP, and SMTP settings that you will need to configure into the third-party email client:
pop.csi.com ; port 110 (SSL = port 995)
imap.csi.com ; port 143 (SSL = port 993)
NOTE: The port numbers are entered in a separate field from the POP or IMAP hostname.
When you are setting up your POP3 or IMAP client, you will need to use your complete email address (e.g username@compuserve.com) as your username and use the password you created as part of the migration. You will also need to configure your SMTP, or outbound email connection, to use:
smtp.csi.com ; port 587 (SSL = port 465)
NOTE: This new SMTP server will require you to supply your complete email address (e.g username@compuserve.com) and password to send mail.
8. What is the difference between POP3 and IMAP?There are two basic ways to set up an email program such as Eudora, Entourage, Thunderbird, or Outlook to check your email. One is to use a POP (POP3: Post Office Protocol) and the other is to use IMAP (IMAP4: Internet Message Access Protocol).
POP3 is a one-way communication path. Your device asks us for data and pulls it from our servers -- but that's it. Things you do on your device have no effect on the server. If you read a message on your phone, then log in to your mailbox, you will see that same message marked as unread.
IMAP is a two-way communication path. Unlike with POP, your devices talk back to our servers and sync your changes automatically with IMAP. When you sign in to your account in a web browser, actions you've taken on your email client or mobile device (like putting a message in a 'work' folder) will also appear in webmail (your message will be in your 'work' folder). This all happens automatically once you set up IMAP, so you don't have to read or sort all your mail twice. This is really helpful when accessing your mailbox from multiple devices.
We recommend that you use IMAP access to ensure that you will always have the same view of your mailbox no matter where you view it -- at home, office, mobile, or anywhere. Below are the advantages to using IMAP:
- messages are stored on the server are accessible from any computer and webmail anywhere in the world
- IMAP mail folders remain synchronized with IMP (webmail)
- sent messages and drafts are also stored on the server
- IMAP mail is backed up on the server and can be restored
- ease of migration from a program to a program and from a computer to another computer/location
- ease of setting up additional computers to check your email, no need to copy anything fro one computer to another
9. Why don't I see the email addresses that are in my CompuServe Classic Client Address Book in this new webmail experience?
The email addresses in your old address book are stored on your local computer, so we have no way to migrate them into the new email system. If you are using either CS3 and CS4 clients, you can find your address book (ADDRBOOK.DAT) in the SUPPORT subdirectory. Make a copy of this file and save it in another location (such as your Desktop). Once you have completed this step, you will need to download a free utility that converts a .DAT file into a .CSV file. There are many of these tools available -- just go to
AOL Search and search for "DAT to CSV".
Once you have converted your address book from a .DAT to a .CSV file, you can import the addresses into your new CompuServe Classic mailbox. You will need to login using
CompuServe Classic webmail (
http://webmail.compuserve.com) and use the instructions on how to import these addresses at our
Help Portal.
10. Why can't I set mail filters in webmail? Our development team is working on making this feature available. We anticipate that this feature will be available in mid July 2009.
We hope you enjoy your new webmail experience.

41. Hi .. I've been with CompuServe for 16 years .. and yet .. the "Migration Process" does NOT recognize me. Can anyone please tell me WHAT I'm doing wrong.
I've used every conceivable log-on in order to submit my info:
HMore@compuserve.com
74664.2440@compuserve.com
74664,2440
All being used with the POP3 Password I've been using for years, and years and years. Keeps telling me "unable to migrate your account, etc., etc".
Any guidance greatly appreciated. Thanks .. Helen More (Boston, MA - USA)

42. Re: address book conversion (.dat to .csv)
As previous poster Kenn Walters indicated, the online resources to do this are virtually nonexistant. I've spent the past six hours on the task. Apart from a few freeware / trial versions that do nothing, all other sites point to commercial ($$)software.
The best link I found is here:
http://community.compuserve.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?redirCnt=2&tsn=&nav=messages&webtag=ws-cssoftware&tid=45177
Follow the message links to the Tom Kiehl utilities to convert your address book to a .csv file. The process worked well for me and the .csv file (1750 contacts) appears to be fine.
Unfortunately, the import of the .csv file failed in my webmail contacts with this error message - Unable to import contacts: the format of the import file was unrecognized.
At this point, I'm not sure what else to do?!

43. How do I add an individual address to my contacts list from an email in my inbox?
I have done a through search of my webmail functions and have found no such capability - apart from the "automatically" adding addresses to contacts function under Settings/Compose.
Checking this adds the addresses of all incoming mail to the contacts list, which I do not want.
Also, how do I get the "name" of the sender to appear in the inbox "From" section rather than the email address? I find this extremely annoying and see no way of changing it.

44. 18-year veteran of CServe. Migrated my mail account on Thursday. Logged into Webmail right after migration and never again until some help from this blog. I still cannot get to the mail box from POP3, using Netscape Communicator 4.8. I'm getting to the CSI server, but cannot get around the account name. Netscape apparently won't do the concatenation of the "username at compuserve.com at csi.com" -- it's truncating at the after the first ".com". Any idea how to get Communicator to work with this mess? (Don't suggest the obvious, "Get a new mail client." :)

45. To: HK
I'm surprised by your experience that the option to "Automatically add email addresses to Contacts" will add the addresses from all incoming mail to your contacts list, because it isn't doing that for me. I started with no Contacts, and turned that option on. Now, a couple of days later, after receiving numerous emails -- many of which were spam -- I've just checked my Contacts list, and it's still empty!

That's exactly what I'm getting ( from the UK ?? )
As no one appears to be reading this, I've posted the same to both ukcssvc@cs.com and ledenservice@cs.com in the Netherlands and asked AOL feedback to get a technician to look at this blog. What else can you do. They clearly don't want us. :-(

I migrated and can get the compuserve webmail fine. When I use Outlook (not express) via a ATT/Yahoo ISP the pop.csi.com receive is not working at all. I get incorrect user id, password msgs. <
Try changing your password. This has fixed the problem for some users. To change your password, go to http://my.screenname.aol.com and sign in with your full email address, including @compuserve.com.

49. I've managed to make the requisite changes in order to make the webmail work. But for some reason, using the parameters specified, I can't get the POP3 option to work. Here's the error message I get when using Outlook Express:
There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'CompuServe', Server: 'pop.csi.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Account information not available', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Yes. I have sent 7 or 8 emails to my migrated address over 3 days and none have arrived, however I am receiving spam and one from a contact in Germany.
I can not connect to the pop.csi.com server, although other friends in the UK can. I'm HOPING that ONCE the connection problem is resolved, the email delivery problem will go with it, but I'm nearly ay the end of my tether to be honest.
How AOL can't know what's going on is a complete mystery. I have just ask my ISP if they can help, but it's not their responsibility and I doubt they will do anything.

51. Question: Error Number: 0x800CCC79.
Can't send messages using Outlook Express 6, Windows XP Home Edition, and pop.csi.com.
Error message reads:
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was '72624.3064@compuserve.com'. Subject 'ACER Send Test 052209 #2', Account: 'pop.csi.com', Server: 'SMTP.csi.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '553 5.7.1 : Sender address rejected: not logged in', Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 553, Error Number: 0x800CCC79.
I can receive messages from pop.csi.com using Outlook Express 6. I can access emails at webmail.compuserve.com and logging in by using other methods of accessing internet.
Any ideas why messages can't be sent from Outlook Express 6? Is the SMTP setting the problem?

52. I have sent emails from other email addresses I have to my migrated Compuserve address. Most seem to get through, but some do not. The ones that didn't bounced back to the sending address after three dayswith the following message from Mail Delivery System...
The following message to was undeliverable.
The reason for the problem:
5.4.7 - Delivery expired (message too old) 554-'5.7.1 Service unavailable; Client host [212.159.7.100] blocked using blacklist.dnsbl.aol.com; rtr:bb'
The new mailserver seems to be applying more filtering than the old one did. Most importantly, is there anything I can do about this?
Posted at 6:18PM on May 24th 2009 by Mike Strauss
53. In the previous message "The following message to was undeliverable" should have read "The following message to MyUserName@compuserve.com was undeliverable".
When originally submitted, the email address was surrounded by 'less than' and 'greater than' symbols, and this appears to have caused that text to disappear!
Posted at 6:24PM on May 24th 2009 by Mike Strauss
54. Since so many have reported problems, I'd like to report that I had no problems - the migration was seamless, and I had no problems logging in.
- I did have to use my full address to log in, including the @compuserve.com, just like it says to do on the login screen
- I could not sign in if I checked the 'stay signed in' box: this is an obvious bug in the sign-in screen.
- I could also sign in successfully from the Compuserve2000 sign-in page (webmail.cs.com)- it does not have the bug with the 'stay signed in' checkbox, you can use it if you want
- I could also sign in successfully from the AOL webmail sign-in page (webmail.aol.com). AOL has all of these integrated to the same service; you just need to supply the correct email address or screen name (and those two are not the same thing).
- I set up Outlook with POP3 access, per the instructions, and it immediately responded with my test message, and messages I forwarded from a different email account. Looks fine.
- I just enabled my Blackberry with the account, seems to work fine.
Be careful about judging the accessibility of the pop server using the 'ping' command - responses to ping may be disabled at the server. I also got the timeout to the 'ping', but I was successfully using both webmail and Outlook POP access at the time. A 'tracert' also timed out after several nodes, but this could be due to the same type of problem: not all servers are configured to respond to 'ping' and 'tracert' requests.
(My ISP is ATT, Blackberry is a Bold from ATT - but I don't think that should make much of a difference.)
Posted at 7:38PM on May 24th 2009 by stan_dye
55. "This blog is published and maintained by the Mail team at AOL"
But does anyone actually READ it ????
So ping doesn't work.
tracert doesn't work
Still can't telnet pop.csi.com 110 though, like I can every other pop server I use, including pop.compuserve.com
Despite the excellent news that the system is working for *some* people, is there any chance of this getting sorted.
I sent a further email to my migrated address last evening. Needless to say, it didn't turn up.
This simply *has* to be a problem within the AOL server network.

56. typical AOL crap
why cannot i simply delete a message.
why cannot i simply multi delete messages.
got to go and empty the trash can.
bit much with a broken arm
AOL had better shape up and give a simple service that does not require multiple actions to organise mail

57. I use compuserve since 17 years and switched to the new system last monday. I can receive emails with my 'old' xxx@compuserve.com adress and can send emails with the new system.
But the last years I use Thunderbird for receiving and sending emails. And now I try to do this after switching to the new system, but it doesn't work.
If I ping pop.csi.com, imap.csi.com, smpt.csi.com I get always the answers "time out".
So: how to set up Thunderbird?
(BTW I'm living in Germany)
